A John Deere is recognisable from the far side of a field, and that is exactly what makes a scratch on one so annoying. Green is among the hardest colours to match by eye. Get the tone slightly wrong and the repair draws more attention than the damage did.

Coatee JD Green is mixed to the original John Deere factory shade rather than approximated from a general-purpose green. Sprayed over a properly prepared scratch, the patch settles into the surrounding panel instead of announcing itself. How to touch up a John Deere panel

1. Clean the area. Wash off dirt, oil and grease and let the panel dry completely. Paint will not bond over diesel film or mud.
2. Deal with any rust first. Take rough or rusted spots back with fine sandpaper until you reach sound metal. Painting over rust hides it for a few weeks and then fails.
3. Mask around the repair. Newspaper and tape are enough. Overspray travels further than most people expect, especially on a windy day.
4. Shake the can, then spray in light coats. Hold it roughly six to eight inches from the panel and keep the can moving in steady passes. Two or three thin coats will always look better than one heavy one, which is what causes runs.
5. Let it dry between coats. Give each coat a few minutes before the next. Rushing this is the most common reason a home touch-up looks patchy.

How many cans will you need

One 300g can covers 18 to 20 square feet in a single application, which is comfortably enough for a set of scratches, a chipped fender edge or a faded bonnet section. A full panel respray will need more. Buying one extra can is cheaper than stopping halfway through a job and matching a second batch later.

Common questions

Will this match my tractor exactly?
JD Green and JD Yellow are matched to the original John Deere factory shades and cover every John Deere model. Bear in mind that paint on an older machine will have faded from sun exposure, so a repair on a well-weathered panel may read slightly fresher than the surrounding area. On newer machines the match is very close.

Will it protect against rust?
Yes, provided you remove existing rust first. The paint film seals bare metal against moisture, mud and fertiliser. Sprayed straight over rust, it will lift.

How long will the repair last?
Several years with proper preparation and normal use. Durability depends far more on how the machine is stored and worked than on the paint itself.

Do I need any experience?
No. The aerosol is designed for people who have never sprayed before. If you are working on a large or highly visible panel and want a perfect result, practise your technique on a piece of scrap metal first.

Should I buy the kit instead?
