How to Choose Tractor Spray Paint: A Buyer's Guide for Farmers and Mechanics
Tractor spray paint has one job: put the original colour back on a scratched or rusted panel and keep it there through sun, rain, mud and fertiliser. Not every can does that well. This guide covers five things to check before you buy, so the repair matches and lasts. If you already know your shade, go straight to our tractor spray paint range.
1. Match the shade to your tractor brand
Every tractor maker uses its own colours, and a near-match shows up as a patch. Look for paint mixed to the original factory finish of your brand, not a generic red or blue. Coatee makes factory-matched shades for 10 makes, for example Tengo Red and MM Red for Mahindra, JD Green and JD Yellow for John Deere, and SM Aegian Blue, SM Grey, SM Red and SM White for Swaraj. The full list is on the tractor paint shade card.
Old paint fades in the sun, so new paint can look slightly brighter than a weathered panel. Keep the repair small and feather the edges so it blends in.
2. Check coverage and can size
Check how much area a can covers so you buy enough to finish the job in one go. One 300 g Coatee can covers 18 to 20 sq ft in a single application, which is enough for scratches and chips across several panels. For a bigger job such as a full bonnet or fender, measure the area first and buy enough cans to finish it in one session.
3. Look for quick drying
A tractor waiting for paint to dry is not working. Quick-drying acrylic spray paint lets you repair in the morning and get back to the field the same day. Coatee is touch-dry in 3 to 5 minutes. Spray two or three thin coats a few minutes apart rather than one heavy coat, which can run.
4. Make sure it protects bare metal from rust
Scratches matter because they expose metal to moisture and chemicals, and rust then spreads under the paint around them. A good touch-up paint seals bare metal once the rust has been sanded back to clean metal. Preparation matters as much as the paint itself: wash, sand, wipe with thinner to remove diesel film and grease, then spray.
5. Decide between a single can and a touch-up kit
Buy a single can for light scratches with no rust, if you already have sandpaper and a degreaser. If there is rust or bare metal, several areas to repair, or it is your first time spraying, a kit saves a trip to the shop. The Coatee Tractor Spray Paint Touch-Up Kit includes a colour-matched 300 g can, sandpaper, professional-grade thinner and a microfibre cloth.
Quick checklist before you buy
- A shade made for your tractor brand, not a generic colour
- Enough coverage for the area you are repairing
- Quick drying, so the tractor can go back to work
- Seals bare metal against rust
- Sandpaper and thinner to hand, or a complete touch-up kit
The same paint also works on other metal around the farm, such as harvesters, ploughs, seeders and gates, as long as the surface is prepared the same way.
